Spooky Action at a Distance – Entanglement-Based QKD in Practice, From the Physical Layer to the Application

Our vision for ELVIS is simple: Everywhere, Everytime, for Everyone — bringing quantum-secure key distribution within reach of any network, at any scale. This talk presents ELVIS, our entanglement-based QKD system, and the practical steps toward realizing that vision. We first position the technology within the landscape of existing approaches and distinguish it from other solutions, focusing on the specific characteristics of entanglement-based protocols — particularly with regard to security guarantees, device independence, and resistance to tampering. Building on this, we demonstrate the practical deployment of ELVIS across multiple network layers: from encryption at Layer 1 up to security at the application layer. Using concrete implementations, we show how QKD-derived key material can be integrated into existing security architectures. Finally, we discuss key scalability questions: how can entanglement-based systems be advanced for deployment in larger networks, with multiple participants, and over greater distances?
