"git revert" review of an OpenSSL fork
Akamai tried to fork OpenSSL, with two major goals: make support of the initial "QUIC patches" a first-class feature, and gather community support so that eventually there would be enough momentum to apply to the ASF to be an Apache Incubator project. We didn't succeed. I'll talk about what we learned; perhaps there are some lessons for the OpenSSL community.
— Compositor's note —
Rich has been involved with OpenSSL since it was SSLeay, and the members were advised not to come to the United States for fear of being arrested for exporting cryptography. His teams did the first multi-thread support and initial OCSP implementation among others. He was invited to join OpenSSL shortly after Heartbleed and stayed for a couple of years. During that time he led the efforts to switch to the Apache license, standardize the CLI options and online help, close many old defects, and helped resurrect the project and community from its moribund state.
